Captain DeniL’s Journey with Dream Film

Recognized as “Captain,” he gained acclaim in 2016 for his short film “Captain MPOS,” shot entirely on a smartphone. This film marked a milestone as the first Malaysia microfilm to host a charity premiere in cinemas. Inspired by this success, Captain pursued filmmaking at 36.

In 2017, Captain faced challenges during market exploration. His smartphone short films, including “Good and Beautiful” and “Autobiography of a Master,” garnered interest, but traditional filmmaking still dominated the market. Determined, he formed his own production team and began using professional equipment. Short Films like “The Days Together with Popcorn” and “Runway: Prologue” started captivating audiences. The autobiographical “The Days Together with Popcorn” premiered to a full house in Penang.

By 2018, Captain officially established Dream Film Productions, expanding into commercial projects and launching smartphone filmmaking workshops. He also began work on “Be a Star,” a short film about cyberbullying, which premiered on June 6, 2018.

In 2019, Captain co-founded 10 FILMS, producing ten awareness short films for government departments. The first, “Scars,” depicting a child’s life from a broken family, won third place at the 2019 Three Acts of Goodness International Microfilm Contest in France.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Captain’s short films “Be a Star” and “We Are Still Living” won Excellence Awards in the 2020 and 2021 Three Acts of Goodness International Microfilm Contests. Dream Film Productions officially registered its trademark as Dream Film in 2020 and received formal approval in 2022.

From 2022 onwards, Captain began preparations for “OPPA,” a cultural film focused on raising awareness about romance scammers. This marks the first time a cultural film has been used to highlight such issues in Malaysia. Filming started in April 2023 and was completed in May. “OPPA” is notably the first Malaysian film to collaborate with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department of the Royal Malaysia Police. The film is set for nationwide release, with strong support from the Malaysia Police Department.

Captain began building his filmmaking experience through short films, which laid the foundation for his expertise. He now promotes Dream Film’s flagship short films, including “The Turning Point,” “Make It Happen,” and “Connection,” all of which have garnered significant media attention. These projects reflect his journey from creating impactful short films to producing works that resonate with broader audiences.
